Celebrating two years of powered-up radio for Cuba and South America

On January 30th, 2018, TWR Bonaire’s voice of hope across the Caribbean and South America became much louder! On that day, TWR inaugurated the most powerful broadcast radio station in the Western Hemisphere. Known as ‘Shine 800AM’, TWR-Bonaire broadcasts Bible-based Gospel programs on 800kHz from their new 440kW transmitter. After the Power-Up from 100 kW to 440 kW, the radio station has a potential audience of more than 100 million listeners from Cuba, all the way south to Venezuela and Brazil, as well as from the Yucatan Peninsula, east across the Caribbean. TWR President Lauren Libby describes the station as “a big voice for Jesus”.

All Cubans can be reached
When we asked pastor Alberto Gonzalez, director of TWR in Cuba, about the impact of the power-up he said: “I am delighted to confirm that the upgrade of the signal from Bonaire transmitter has been a wonderful blessing for Cuban people. We are receiving letters from listeners from places that we have never reached before. Driving in my car at night across Havana City or heading to Pinar del Rio, the most western province of Cuba, the signal is sound and clear. This means that all Cuban people can listen to TWR. In a country like ours, where we don't have media access to preach the Gospel, it means a lot! It gives us the hope to reach all Cubans with the hope of salvation God has provided in Christ. I strongly believe that only at the Eternity we will know the real impact of this project and how many people are saved inside Cuba thanks to the TWR ministry!”

Blowtorch for Cuba
After the launch of the boosted radio signal from TWR’s Bonaire station in 2018, Haven Today was one of TWR’s ministry partners who took advantage of TWR’s Cuba-wide footprint to put their program El Faro de Redención (Redemption Lighthouse) on the air. Before starting the broadcast, Haven Today had been involved in distributing Bibles in Cuba, where there is a shortage of biblical materials. “We are so thankful we can be a voice for Cuba thanks to the powerful towers of TWR near the coast of South America,” Haven Today President Charles Morris says. “They are like a blowtorch for Cuba!

I look out for your program every night
Listeners themselves contact TWR daily and say that they can hear the programs loud and clear as the local station. One Cuban woman wrote, “I often feel lonely. I am physically disabled, and my left leg is amputated. I study the Bible, because of my handicap I cannot go to church. I like your programs a lot, it is very inviting and every night I lookout for it. I want to be a person who loves Christ. But I need tools to help me with this. Can you send me a Bible?”

Steve Shantz, TWR’s vice president for Latin America says, “It is very exciting and gratifying to receive reports Shine 800am Bonaire can now be heard in places where before the power-up, the reception was not possible. We have also received reports from listeners who only discovered the broadcasts after January 2018 in places like Mexico where we were never heard before.”

To keep this remarkable outreach across Latin America going strong, you can help. Together, we can keep Christian programming on the air in this needy region of our planet.
